Vortex Sound Research

I'm planning on getting a summer job to buy a bunch of guitar pedals and shit and would like to get into synthesizers (my wallet is scared). I'm thinking about getting an Arturia MicroBrute. Is there anything better for the price? Should I spend more or less money to start out?
