Hardware vs software for me.

Not trying to start the debate on which is better. However I am new to music and just started to learn keyboard back in January. I really wanted a real analogy synth so I got a REV2. While it is well made, has a great layout and has all the modulation you can ask for, I just didn’t dig the sound at all. For my money I couldn’t keep it, it’s gone.

So here is the situation I am in and I am looking for advice.

Priorities: 1) Want to be come a good keyboard player so I can be innovative. So 61 keys and polyphonic are important. 2) I don’t have a home studio, don’t plan on making tracks and will never gig ever. 3) Must be portable as I am deploying this summer on a ship. I will have some room to store it, but it has to be manageable. The REV2 was about as large as I would want to try. 4) I don’t want something like a Juno-DS where it’s called a synthesizer but you can’t create a new patch from scratch.

Given my desires. Should I get a real synth like a Prologue or a midi board plus software.
