What FX pedal should I get first?

I’m happy with my minimal synth setup so I’m considering some FX pedals. What are your favorite pedals for synths? I’m thinking of time-based effects like delay, reverb, or a combination of both. Whacky psychedelic effects will be considered. Budget around $500.
