So I made a thing for my things...

So I made a thing for my things...

Appalled at the high prices being asked for synth racks, and not being able to find one that was the right size for my gear, I built this little angled table/lectern thingy:

Custom table with gear on it.

There's a 7-way power strip inside that lets me have just one mains power lead coming out of the table, at the rear right. All the power supplies for the mixer and synths are inside the table.

Here it is without any gear on it:

Table with no gear and a pen for scale (sorry, out of bananas)

Here's the inside, before all the cables and power supplies were added:

Inside - empty

Some details:

  • I made this from 12mm MDF that I cut with a jigsaw, following a design from my fevered imagination
  • I cut the holes with a hole saw and/or drill bit, and enlarged them with a file and reamer
  • I painted the outside matt black from a spray can
  • the hinged stay looks cool, but doesn't bear the weight of the lid once the gear is in place
  • the gear is attached to the lid using self-adhesive Velcroâ„¢ strips, pre-cut to size
  • no, I will not make you one too! :-)
  • I'm going to replace the Yamaha PSR piano/synth/MIDI keyboard with a KeyStep Pro in due course, then the gear will not be as hidden as it is now.
