Any PLL experts?

So I'm familiar with the PLL sound in pedal format. I've had an industrialextric 4046 and a Beetronics swarm. The loopy flangy tones kind of like a ripping sound.

Now I got a Doepfer PLL and it sounds nothing close. I was reading about adding a clock divider in the middle of the chain but how would that even work? They mean frequency divider right? But even then what are the makings of that PLL sound that is found in guitar pedals.

I'm going out from my grandmother osc into the PLL and getting nothing remotely of what I want. I want to try the frequency divider thing but don't want to buy modules and it doesn't do what I want. (I have a Pam's but how would I even patch a clock divider in I'm pretty sure they mean frequency)

Anybody know anything about PLL circuits and especially how to get the doepfer to do classic PLL tones cause as is it's not happening. Maybe it's user error?

EDIT: solved you need a frequency divider, so you take the square out into a freq divider then back in and voila you get ripping tones. Now I can wholeheartedly recommend the doepfer pll.
