First Hardware Synth

Hello everybody!

I am very new to the hardware synth scene. I am a music technology graduate student, and our professor has recommended that we purchase a hardware synthesizer for our class on synthesizers. The class will teach about how synthesizers work, and we will be able to use our own synthesizer for all of the assignments.

That being said, I am very new to all of this. I have a few software synths, those being Serum, Vital and a few other free synths along with Ableton Live Suite, but I have no idea where to look for interesting hardware synthesizers. So I come to you. With a budget of $1000 or less, what synthesizers would you recommend to a student who will get to really know the synthesizer for a lot of assignments over the course of the next few months. There are no other requirements. It just has to be a hardware synth. It could be digital, analog, monophonic, polyphonic, easy to learn, or harder to learn. I'm just looking for something interesting to buy, and the more recommendations I get the better.

Thanks a ton!
