Vortex Sound Research

So basically I just want a clear description of aftertouch. It seems to be an important feature a lot of people look for in a keybed/controller but I am still a little lost on what it really does and its significance. I also see it as a common method of modulation on my synthesizers. Any help would be appreciated.
