Sampling / Looping Workflow - is this possible?

I've got a modular system that I'd like to start sampling and looping phrase length snippets from -- think more "oh hey this experimentation is creating something neat, let's record it and build off of it" instead of "I am setting out to Compose Some Music Right Now". Almost all the time the modular is working off of all analog-based sequencers and clocks, like the 0-Ctrl and DFAM -- No MIDI.

In a perfect world, I'd be able to:

  • Record multiple tracks/loops and able to mute them individually.
  • Automatically set the length of the loop and quantize playback and recording of else to multiples of the first track.
  • Be able to modify start / loop / end points after the fact if I wanted to.
  • As a bonus, be able to time stretch and pitch shift.

I think I've just described an Octatrack, but I'm a little intimidated by them (not to mention the cost). Is there anything else that would do the trick?

I've been mucking around with Logic on my computer but it seems to want everything to be pre-defined ahead of time (e.g. tempo, loop length). I really dislike using general purpose computers for my music making anyways so I'd like to avoid it aside from just hitting "Record" and letting everything else do their thing. Or is there a way to make Logic behave as I described?
