Setting audio levels when recording a Vocoder

Setting audio levels when recording a Vocoder

I use an Ultranova and most commonly use it because I like the vocoders. I am now starting to record the vocoder into Ableton, and because it's a sort of "vocal" instrument, my initial instinct was to set the input levels at -6dB peak. However, even if you scream into it, the volume barely registers on the output into the DAW and it doesn't really "peak." It's sort of like it has built-in compression. Thus I'm wondering if I should just set the level higher, like -2dB or something, to get a stronger signal for mixing.

Here is the waveform I get when recording into Ableton at about -6dB peak. As you can see, it already looks quite compressed and isn't very peaky at all.

Anyone have any advice on this?
