Advice On Hardware Sequencer Upgrade — Squid?

A few months ago I purchased a KeyStep Pro in order to be the brains to a handful of hardware synths, and while I like it, Im not sure its exactly for me. I am not a keyboard player and I think I would prefer a grided pad situation. Im really drawn to experimenting with melodic patterns, where the Keystep is best if you know what you want to play. I really like the way I can sequence melodies on Novation's circuit. SO I've been looking into alternatives and I am learning towards the Toraiz Squid.

I do not need this to function in a live performance setting, or need to sequence full songs, it will just be for coming up with and improvising melodies in my studio on my hardware gear that I will record into Ableton to arrange and edit further. I also dont need a bunch of CV/GAte outputs and I will most likely sequence all of my drums on my TR8s, so I would really just be looking for melody patterns, Im mostly drawn to the way the Squid mangles midi notes with the different pattern directions.

Ive also looked at the Deluge, but not sure it has the same functionality in terms of mangling and rearranging midi note patterns, and dont necessarily need it to be a standalone groovebox as well as a midi controller (but not mad if it does).

Any other alternatives I should look at first? The Polyend SEQ looks great, but out of my price range. ID like to stay somewhere in the Squid / Deluge area.

ID really love it if I could access this workflow with my MAschine MK3 or Push2, but also dont mind having a standalone sequencer.

Any ideas or opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

(Synths I will be sequencing if it matters at all)

- Moog Sub PHatty

- Moog Minitaur

- Arturia MicroFreak

- Korg WaveState

- Korg MS20 mini

-Korg Prologue 8

- MiniBrute

- Modal Skulpt

-MicroKorg

submitted by /u/JREY-80
[link] [comments]
