Manufacturer Horror Story: Sognage + Maelstrom "Stereo" Reverb

I wanted to have a Stereo Reverb with a modest footprint in my case.

Audio Damage Æverb Mk2 is almost impossible to come by,
so my second choice turned out to be the Sognage Maelstrom.

The order+shipping process was super great and fast.
The build quality of this module is absolutely PREMIUM.

When it arrived I boasted to my friends "this is the highest quality module I've ever owned".

--

My first nightmare was due to a reversed ribbon cable (with regards to the quasi-universal nature of shrouded headers in eurorack).
This was quickly resolved by crimping a new IDC connector myself. Luckily the module was not damaged (again top-tier build quality).

During this mishap I reached out to Sognage in earnest. Hopefully they will take note and start producing cables that are consistent with the rest of the major manufacturers. I was met with a verbose response that claimed I don't know what I'm talking about. I only mention this because a pattern emerges throughout our exchange.

--

The real nightmare began when I tested the module. Why doesn't the Right side act the same as the Left side? I reached out again, only to receive another verbose "you don't know what you're doing" response.

But they used a key phrase that tingled my spidey sense -- "this is how the stereo effect is achieved".
Wait, I thought this was a Stereo Reverb, not a Stereo Effect Reverb....

This module is an implementation of one Accutronics BTDR-3 reverb chip.

The pinout of this chip only has one input.

"Stereo" implementation requires summing to the single input pin.

--

Am I wrong in feeling that this is indeed not a True Stereo Reverb?

The design uses "Tricks" to mimic a Stereo "Effect".

This module is being misrepresented, full stop.

I have been "Tricked" and I want to send the module back.

--

They are expecting me to cover shipping back to South Africa (from the US), and I suspect they will not refund my original shipping charges ($50). They also warn that they must thoroughly test the module before sending a refund.

--

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

submitted by /u/pokoj2006
[link] [comments]
