What are some good synths (both hardware and software) for making this type of music?

This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AHcak434Zw&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=1 is the soundtrack for the video game Stellaris by Andreas Waldetoft. I think he is a brilliant composer.

He uses a combination of software synths (maybe hardware) and orchestral music with strings, orch percussion, and choir and many of the tracks in this score are in 5/4 and 7/8 time signature, weaving in and out of various repeating interwoven themes.

This playlist is like 60+ tracks. It's very inspirational to listen to and this is another reason why I wanted to share it with you all.

I hope you give it a listen and get inspired today and make something beautiful! If you do please post it here, I would love to hear it!

Anyhow, I am looking to replicate this type of space traveling, ethereal cyber sound like in some of these slower cyber tracks in this score like:

Then Comes Light (My favorite Track in this score) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hlm93T16n8&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=42 I'm interested in replicating this type of heavy but clean cyber beat.

Dragon's Breath - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq50NrujfC8&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=24

Ends of the Galaxy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRtcZxzBrdg&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=4

Birth of a Star (One of my favorites) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q3iDZ9EyDc&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=17 So good and so mellow. It just takes you places, when you close your eyes and listen.

Deep Space Travel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH3Hct6coWQ&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=3

Sigma Tauri - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdf3dGADY2Q&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=14

I'm also wondering what I could use to make that "harsher" cyber sound like here in this track Robo Sapiens - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luCvfG2vhXs&list=PLQOzEU-fKC9kWN2Nif_EQEbhV09rFVG4N&index=36

What are some synths that you would recommend, both hardware and software for making this type of sound/music? I know most come with leads, pads, atmos, textures arps, etc. that can do this but I am curious if you have some personal recommendations and favorites. (or tips on how to achieve this type of dreamy but also very cyber vibe).

I myself use a PC with Reaper, and Massive X/Massive, Vital, Absynth, Kontakt (Kontakt factory library and whatever else comes with NI Komplete like Pharlight/Straylight for atmos), and some other free synths like Synth1, OBXD, and some other cheap synths I bought off of Plugin Boutique like Carbon Electra, Hybrid3, CZ, and Tronto Trilogy by Tronsonic. I got a few Orchestral libraries from Spitfire Audio and some hybrid trailer libraries from 8DIO for layering strings and trailer type stuff.

I don't have Omnisphere or Phaseplant and I know these 2 are the go to software synths for sound design and textures/ambiences. I plan to pick these up at some point in the near future. I know Diva and UHE products in general are great synths but they are serious CPU hogs and run like shit for me when I tried them. I heard UVI Falcon, Sylenth and the Arturia synths are good as well.

I would also like to pick up a hardware synth in the near future that would be good for this. I'm looking at the Wavestate and the Arturia Polybrute currently.

Are there any other hardware synths that you would recommend? So far, as far as hardware, I have a Yamaha Motif ES8 88 key workstation/sampler/synth (my main midi controller and synth) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x44z2Yn0i9E (not my video, this isn't me, just a random video showing of what it can do) and my 2 Korg Electribes. My Motif can do a lot of this cool space stuff already but I am looking to see what would compliment it best if I were to pick up a new synth.

So yeah, in general I am wondering what would be some good synths for making what I call "flying through space" and Cyber style music (think Mass Effect games, Tron Legacy, Klaus Schule/Vangelis and this soundtrack specifically etc.).

Any and all advice, recommendations, or thoughts are welcome. Thank you.

submitted by /u/diglyd
[link] [comments]
