Then came Incandescent in spring 2015 and this “Prayer to the Energy” which was released at the start of this year. And I just can't imagine that this brilliant American musician doesn't get more meditative attention than some comments on Facebook. It's how that I heard about these 2 albums. The Texan musician would say to us that the music of the first CD was thought and developed with a wintry spirit, where snowflakes swirl as dragonflies on coke, that I would not be really surprised. The movement of sequences, to say the least on the first CD, is as light as a crazy snow and trace very harmonious rhythmic patterns which stick to the eardrums. Offered as much in downloadable format as in manufactured CD, I heard that the artwork is very beautiful and is illustrated of <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Hollan%20Holmes" target="_blank">Hollan Holmes</a>' paintings, “Prayer to the Energy” is an album in two phases with a first package of 62 delicious minutes which are nibbled by a panoply of electronic rhythms sculptured with a very harmonious vision.</div>"Prayer to the Energy" sets the tone with a structure of polyphased rhythms where several lines of sequences meet in a rhythmic crossroads which turns in all directions. Even in its membrane of stellar poetry, the rhythm is frenzied and tumbles by abrupt jerks in a sound crossroads which favors the disorder. Catchy on the ear and lively for the fingers, the crowding in sequences leaves the latitude necessary for <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Hollan%20Holmes" target="_blank">Holland Holmes</a> so that he can trace beautiful moments of emotionalism and intensity with chords and divine arrangements which seize the listening. Shorter, "Insulated" raises the rhythmic bar higher with a movement lively and more jerky than the title-track. The effect of echo, or rhythmic canon, in the structure reminds me enormously those of <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Roach%20Steve%2080%27s" target="_blank">Steve Roach</a> in <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/2013/10/steve-roach-now-traveller-1992.html" target="_blank">Now and Traveller</a>. "Darkness and Light" is a very nice ballad. The movement is slower with good oscillations in the rhythm which is supported by sober electronic percussions. More iridescent sequences give a beautiful harmonious contrasting effect and allows us to smell the delicacy of <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Hollan%20Holmes" target="_blank">Holmes</a> in the design of his electronic landscapes. Layers of voices make the emotions more magical whereas sharper synth lines add a good shroud of intensity to this beautiful ballad jacked on a carousel of sequences stuffed with contrasting tones. We speak about intensity? "Great Expectations" doesn't give its place! It's a nice ambiospherical slow rhythm with a guitar which fools our sense of hearing by scattering its harmonious riffs, like the movement of the sequencer. The music is very intense and could fit marvelously with a music of a dramatic movie where the solitary hero is crying his soul out in the desert. "Lucid Dreams" brings us towards the more meditative territories of the 2nd CD. The main movement of twinkling sequences blacksmith of ambient rhythms is flooded in a somber soundscape which is tinted of slow morphic wings. "That Ephemeral Spark" is another good meditative slow beat with a brilliant movement of the sequencer where crystal clear chords, as shaded, swirl with attractive nuances in other sequences a bit organic. Here as everywhere in this album, sonic pearls sparkling like stars modify slightly the harmonious portion of the rhythm basis. We easily dream about angels with this title while the storm the which is "We Can Never Go Back" is forged around a livelier and a starver movement. The arrangements, as well as the race of the rhythm, give a momentum of suspense rather intense. The first CD sells its last minutes spot to the epic "A Midwinter Night's Dream". Recorded during the Star's End radio show hosted by the famous Chuck Van Zyl, the movement proposes a long sound journey through movements of sequences divided between rhythmic and meditative phases with good impulses, like some nice withdrawns, between rebel sequences and others submitted to the evolutionary temperaments of "A Midwinter Night's Dream". The first minutes are very intense with good implosions coming from a dramatic effect of a bass which pierces the rigor of a sober but insistent movement of a sequencer in mode; what goes up comes down. The music borrows another tangent around the 9th minute. The movement remains intense with a dark and intrusive sound shroud where the sequences skip in the jingling of wintry harmonies. That remains very striking, one would say stars of glass which burst on an opaque dome of sounds, and while the music invades its last den, <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Hollan%20Holmes" target="_blank">Hollan Holmes</a> adds some more of melancholy with a finale frozen in the pleasant harmonies of a celestial choir. This first CD of “Prayer to the Energy” is a monument comparable to <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/2015/05/hollan-holmes-spirits-of-starlight-2014.html" target="_blank">The Spirits of Starlight</a> that I had devoured the emotions in the ceiling. I won't lie to you; the CD 2 is make for dodo! To help you sleep! And "The Suspension of Time" indicates us the posology used by the Texan sculptor of ambiences with nice synth shadows which float as the caresses of Morpheus. Other layers, feed the touching vision of <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Hollan%20Holmes" target="_blank">Hollan Holmes</a> in respect of a fascinating compassionate communication between the author and those ears thirsty for this need of serenity to the Zen music lover. It's as much beautiful and meditative as the most beautiful music of <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Takahashi%20Juta" target="_blank">Juta Takahashi</a>. There is a lot of warmth in these winged caresses, as here and as in the astral journey of "Cloud World" with vibes and elements of ambiences which describe well the color of the title. "Cover of Darkness" is indeed darker. But always there are these opalescent lines which squeak like specters of glass scratching walls of concrete in a mass of hollow breezes. Adopting a rise of vibes which feigns a crescendo of emotions, "Sublime Stasis" is more ethereal, even with these snores of the oblivion, while "Breathing" blows the hot and the cold with a vision which caresses both opposite. <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Roach%20Steve%2080%27s" target="_blank">Steve Roach</a>'s imprints resist the originality of <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Hollan%20Holmes" target="_blank">Hollan Holmes</a> in his creation of meditative music. There are few tribal elements, even if long drones are making oblong repetitive detours in the opening of "Cerro Torre". Also performed within the framework of Star's End, this time it was for a Halloween Special in 2016, this long sonic river binds itself in our senses with a mixture of slow movements filled with threatening hummings and with more irradiant shadows which unite their contrasts in some nice floating orchestrations. The breezes sound like a choir that we would hear by far underneath the ground while the music always stays of a sibylline nature with rises of adrenalin which wrap us such as sonic waves covering our peace of mind. And like real waves, there are always residues when they go back to the sea and come to cover us again of sounds. And it's there that <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Stearns%20Michael" target="_blank">Michael Stearns</a>' cosmic waves spatter over those music washes. Intense, due to its slow and patient immersive movement, "Cerro Torre" reaches a pinnacle of emotionalism, which leaves little room to serenity, when the music crumbles its last breezes in a cloud of hummings which can annoy an ear on the edge to fall asleep. Introducing thus a battle so that "Cerro Torre" has not to end. Puis virent Incandescent au printemps 2015 et ce “Prayer to the Energy” paru en tout début de 2017. Et je ne peux imaginer que ce brillant musicien américain n'ai pas plus d'attention méditative que quelques post sur Facebook. C'est de cette façon que j'ai entendu parler de ces 2 albums. Le musicien Texan nous avouerait que ce la musique du premier CD a été pensé et élaboré avec un esprit hivernal, où des flocons de neige tournoient comme des libellules sur la coke, que je ne serais pas vraiment surpris. Le mouvement des séquences, à tout le moins sur le premier CD, est aussi léger qu'une neige folle et trace des tracés autant rythmiques qu'harmoniques qui collent au tympan. Offert autant en format téléchargeable qu'en CD manufacturé, paraîtrait que la pochette est très belle et illustrée des peinture d'Hollan Holmes, “Prayer to the Energy” est un album en deux temps avec un premier paquet de 62 délicieuses minutes qui sont grignotées par une panoplie de rythmes sculptés avec une vision très harmonieuse. "Prayer to the Energy" donne le ton avec une structure de rythme polyphasé où plusieurs lignes de séquences se rencontrent dans un carrefour rythmique qui vire en tous sens. Même dans sa membrane de poésie stellaire, le rythme est frénétique et déboule par saccades abruptes dans un carrefour sonique qui privilégie le désordre. Accrochant à l'oreille et entraînant pour les doigts, la promiscuité des séquences laisse la latitude nécessaire à Holland Holmes afin qu'il puisse tracer de beaux moments d'émotivité et d'intensité avec des accords qui saisissent l'écoute et des arrangements divins. Plus court, "Insulated" monte la barre rythmique plus haute avec un mouvement vif et plus saccadé que la pièce-titre. L'effet d'écho, ou de canon rythmique, dans la structure me fait penser énormément à ceux de Steve Roach dans Now & Traveller. "Darkness and Light" est une belle ballade. Le mouvement est plus lent avec de bonnes oscillations dans le rythme qui est soutenu par de sobres percussions électroniques. Des séquences plus moirées donnent un bel effet de contraste harmonique et nous permet de renifler la délicatesse d'Holmes dans la conception de ses paysages électroniques. Des nappes de voix rend les émotions plus féériques tandis que des lignes de synthé plus acérées ajoutent un bon tissu d'intensité à cette belle ballade montée sur un carrousel de séquences truffé de tonalités contrastantes. On parle d'intensité? "Great Expectations" ne donne pas sa place! C'est un beau slow ambiosphérique avec une guitare qui se moque de notre ouïe en éparpillant ses riffs harmoniques comme le mouvement du séquenceur. La musique est très intense et irait à merveille avec une musique d'un film dramatique où le héros solitaire pleurerait son âme en plein désert. "Lucid Dreams" nous amène plus vers les territoires méditatifs du 2ième CD. Le principal mouvement scintillant des séquences forgeuses de rythmes ambiants est noyé dans un sombre paysage sonique teinté de lentes ailes morphiques. "That Ephemeral Spark" est un autre beau slow méditatif avec un mouvement chatoyant du séquenceur où accords limpides comme ombragés tournoient avec d'attrayantes nuances dans des accords un brin organique. Ici comme partout dans cet album, des perles soniques scintillant comme des étoiles nuancent la portion harmonique de la base du rythme. On rêve facilement aux anges avec ce titre alors que la tempête qu'est "We Can Never Go Back" est forgé autour d'un mouvement plus vif et plus affamé. Les arrangements, ainsi que la course du rythme, donnent un élan de suspense assez intense. Le premier CD affiche complet avec le titre fleuve "A Midwinter Night's Dream". Ça reste très saisissant, on dirait des étoiles en verre qui éclatent sur un opaque manteau de sons, et alors que la musique envahit son dernier repaire, Hollan Holmes ajoute encore plus de mélancolie avec une finale figée dans les suaves harmonies d'une chorale céleste. Ce premier CD de “Prayer to the Energy” est un monument comparable à The Spirits of Starlight que j'avais dévoré les émotions dans le plafond. On ne se fera pas de cachettes, le CD 2 est pour le dodo! Et "The Suspension of Time" nous indique la posologie utilisée par le sculpteur d'ambiances Texan avec de belles ombres synthétisées qui flottent comme les caresses de Morphée. D'autre nappes, plus intrusives, alimentent l'attendrissante vision de Holland Holmes en égard d'une fascinante communication compassionnelle entre l'auteur et les oreilles qui assouvissent ce besoin de sérénité chez l'amateur de musique Zen. C'est aussi beau et méditatif que la plus belle des musiques de <a href="http://synthsequences.blogspot.ca/search/label/Takahashi%20Juta" target="_blank">Juta Takahashi</a>. Il y a beaucoup de chaleur dans ces caresses ailées, comme ici et dans le voyage astral de "Cloud World" avec des ambiances qui décrivent la couleur du titre. "Cover of Darkness" est effectivement plus ténébreux. Mais toujours il y a ces lignes opalescentes qui crissent comme des spectres de verre éraflant des murs de de béton dans une masse de brises caverneuses. Adoptant une montée d'ambiances qui simule des crescendos d'émotions, "Sublime Stasis" est plus éthéré, même avec ces ronflements du néant, alors que "Breathing" souffle le chaud et le froid avec une vision qui caresse les deux opposés. Les empreintes de Steve Roach résistent à l'originalité de Hollan Holmes dans sa création de musique méditative. Il y a peu d'éléments tribaux, même si de longs râles rauques font d'oblongs détours répétitifs dans l'ouverture de "Cerro Torre". Performé aussi dans le cadre du Star's End, cette fois-ci c'était pour le spécial Halloween 2016, ce long titre fleuve s'arrime à nos sens avec un mélange de lents mouvements gorgés de bourdonnements menaçants et d'ombres plus irradiantes qui unissent leurs contrastes dans de belles orchestrations valsantes. Les brises sonnent comme une chorale que l'on entendrait de loin sous la terre alors que la musique reste toujours de nature sibylline avec des montées d'adrénaline qui nous enveloppent comme des vagues sonores recouvrant notre quiétude. Et comme de véritables vagues, il reste toujours des résidus lorsqu'elles retournent chercher plus d'éléments pout nous recouvrir à nouveau. Et c'est là que les ondes cosmiques de Michael Stearns rejaillissent sur les splash de musique. Intense, de par son lent et patient mouvement immersif, "Cerro Torre" s'éteint dans un pinacle d'émotivité, qui laisse peu de place à la sérénité, lorsque la musique émiette ses dernières brises dans un nuage de bourdonnements qui peut agacer une oreille sur le bord de s'endormir, initiant une lutte féroce afin que "Cerro Torre" ne puisse à jamais s'éteindre.</div><div>Sylvain Lupari (24/11/2017)</div>
