Drum pad recommendations

Hi y’all,

My wife used to drum in a band, and recently I started messing around with a reface CS and CP. I’ve done a bit of research into drum machines and samplers, but I don’t really know where to start with electric drums/drum pads. I’ve seen the Roland SPD SX and it looks awesome. I’ve seen a couple of Alesis models that are more in the price range that we’re thinking about, but the reviews are all over the place. Do y’all have any recommendations? Also, I’ve been wondering lately, is it advisable to play something like an arturia beatstep, or any other finger-drumming drum/sample pad with marimba-like mallets?

EDIT: clarification
