Trouble trying to execute this effect / idea

I love the sound of the "auto gate" effects sometimes applied to vocals or more trance styled synth leads.

However I only know how to create this effect in a daw. I'm trying to figure out how to do this with an analog pedal or euro rack module and can't find anything close to what I'm looking for.

In my head something like a square lfo controling the audio level of an input seems pretty standard and easy to configure. But from my searching, nothing like this exists?

How would I go about creating this effect, in the simplest manner?

(can provide Audio examples if needed)
