moog mother - inputs marked in white

Hi, on the moog mother there are four input jacks, that are marked with a white circle: gate, run/stop, reset and hold. What do these inputs have in common so that they are marked in the same manner? What do the white circles mean? (Note: I am not talking about the white backgrounds that distinguishes inputs from outputs.)
