How hard would it be to design and build a module?

I got inspired for some modulation ideas while spacing off during dynamical systems lectures. Wonder how difficult it would be to build something on the principles I'd learnt there (how much study/practice would be required). I never soldered or built anything yet. Can you enlighten me?
