Help me identify this machine

About three years ago I saw a performance where one of the musicians used a wooden box with some arcade buttons and some sliders to generate musical noises. It could not do scales or notes, but could do everything from patterns to blasts of noise. If I recall, the manufacturer makes a variety of these instruments. It seemed to be all analogue. It was set up to give surprising but musical sounds. Does anyone have any idea what this thing was? It was in a wooden box about 30x20x10 cm, if memory serves. He had it be because it was great for improvisational performances.
