the first thing that comes to mind when i think of an overrated synthesizer is the SH-101. It's certainly not a bad instrument, I've made an entire track before using just my 101 and it was a fairly painless process and the finished product sounded great, but its basic sound pallet & limited functionality keep it in the closet more often than not.
and i dont know if the M-Audio Venom is necessarily underrated but it certainly does deserve more attention for what it is. Needing an editor to make a patch from scratch is pretty irritating, but its still a pretty great sounding 12-voice synth that you can pick up fro dirt cheap
