Modular or analog for a diy synth?

I’m a total beginner and have never even tried to build a synth but I’ve been looking around and doing research and I have a decent idea of where to start. My end goal is to build a synth but I’m wondering which would be better for a first build. I’m planning on building it without any kits. I kind of got a little lost in the definitions of modular and analog which is why I’m asking about which would make a good first “homemade” synth. Also any extra bits of information on starting would also help like videos and books. Sorry that it’s really vague, if it’s possible a breadboard version would be nice.
