Any tips for learning technical synthesis/electronics for a non-engineer?

I’ve been absolutely absorbed in learning synthesis for the last 2 years. I know enough know to hear a patch and have a good sense of how to dial in something similar.

However, when it comes to the technical/electrical engineering aspects of synthesis, like voltage, hertz, capacitors, transistors… basically anything going on behind the scenes, I am completely lost. Often when I try to learn these sorts of things I find that I’m two steps behind (kinda reminds me of learning how to code…).

I find this especially when I’m trying to patch my semi modular synths (MS 20 especially, my matriarch makes more sense). It feels like I don’t have the technical understanding to sit in the driver’s seat with my gear.

Are there any resources out there for someone with no knowledge of electronics for learning some of the basics of the electronics side of things? Maybe while learning modular?

I think my goal is to eventually be able to really understand my gear to the point that I could repair a synth. So I’m hoping to hear a good place to start for that type of learning (should I build a module? Should I just read and reread the manuals of my synth? Should I build a guitar pedal?)

submitted by /u/eagleandchild
[link] [comments]
