SP404 MK2 - The king of UI reliant in user memory?

I've been learning how to use the Roland SP404 MK2 for a couple of days now. I've read about a third of the aprox 180 pages of the user manual. I'm finding a lot of hidden features, not stated in the panel - Buttons combinations, for instance Shift + Reverse, Shift + Remain, Copy + Exit, Delete + Exit. None of these examples has any visual clue and I'm sure I've passed others that I don't remember right now, apparently you need to memorize all of them if you want to use those features. Or keep coming back to the PDF. I'm also a UX designer and a rule of thumb is that making the user memorize stuff is bad usability - creates cognitive load and makes it harder to use again after a period away. I've used Arturia, Elektron, Korg, Modal, T.E. and Yamaha devices: all have very different UIs but they are self-explaining in their own way and the user manuals serve mainly to help you understand better. The only other UI I've seen that is full of mysterious abbreviations that force you to go back to the reference manual is the Boutique JX08... Is this a Roland thing? Am I missing something or that's truly their style as a brand?

submitted by /u/boligenic
[link] [comments]
