Monitoring and Hearing Protection for Sound Designers?

Sooo i just got done working on a kick drum sound after two hours and the ringing in my ears prompted me to ask a question I've been meaning to ask for ages: what are some tips for protecting your hearing while sound designing?

My current monitoring setup is a pair of bookshelf speakers with 4" woofers and no sub, if thats relevant.
