DAWless recording and midi sync

I am in need of a small multitracker. None of the currently manufactured units offer midi however. I have a choice to get new technology or take a chance on something like a fostex mr-8 that will be used but have midi capabilities. So my question is this, how important is midi sync when recording with a multitracker? Perhaps I am missing the boat but couldn't I simply set the tempo of all my gear to the same setting and or (if doing more of a "live" track) , simply use my sequencer to keep everything playing nice together? Thanks for the advice.
