Good DIY synth resources for beginners?

Hi all, I’ve been somewhat disenchanted by the value proposition of the new products being released by companies like Moog, Korg and Arturia, and am considering dabbling in DIY synthesis as a more fun, less consumerist future path for my hobby. Is this a viable way to get into modular without spending tons of money a la Eurocrack? How much time must be dedicated to it and are there simple projects that could be put together with kids? And—what are some good learning resources for beginners? Thanks in advance!
