MIDI Thru... Huh?

So I just found out sorta by accident that my Dreadbox Erebus v3 doesn't have to be powered on to pass MIDI thru to the Typhon that I just got (what a synth btw!). I am slightly confused and wondering whats up with this?

Do all synths with MIDI thru work this way? I guess I just always thought that the device that passes the MIDI would have to be turned on for it to work, but apparently it doesn't. I get that some thru boxes operate without the need for power, but in this case it's synth that obviously requires power to operate, and not a unit designed for this purpose. Is everyone aware of this behavior? I thought that was pretty interesting...
