Obscure sequencer work flow. Ideas welcome

I have a Korg SQD -1 I purchased new in 1986. It no longer responds to start stop record key presses. I have tried cleaning contacts to no avail.

I miss the record function that let me set it it up so that each note played on a key board represented a beat and there was a rest button.

I could quickly enter the note sequence pressing rest as appropriate to make arpeggio like melodies and I miss this feature in particular.

My MPC ONE does not do this.

I would love a small sequencer that let me do this. Especially if it was just one trick of many in the bag.
