Grey RYTM Mk2 ($1,050) or TR8s ($400) (both secondhand)

Analog RYTM Mk2 (The Grey Meanie) thoughts?

My drums were initially deployed by the Volca Beats, then Drumbrute, then the Digitakt and now the TR8s.

I love the TR8s, here’s what I specifically love the most.

  • amount of knobs for stuff like ‘decay, snappiness’ etc… even though it’s not analog, they implemented my favourite part of an analog drum workmule.

  • I didn’t use the sampling at all - mainly because I felt the only things I wanted were 606/707/808/909 samples, but I was young and naive. All the above and more are present, with the ability to shape the sound like I mentioned in the first point.

  • I play exclusively DAWless, but I really liked the ability to use Roland software to record from the external inputs. Is that a thing on the RYTM?

  • Autofill.

  • Insane amount of per track and global effects.

  • External Inputs L+R and the ability to use the effects on them.

  • Trigger out.

BUT, I miss the deep and sequencing and controlling of external gear via MIDI (as I’m dawless, the Digitakt was perfect for me).

TL;DR:

To cut this ‘short’, I’ve been offered a 2nd hand RYTM Mk2 (the grey one) for $1,454 AUD ($1,050 US).

I bought the TR8s for $410 USD (second hand but practically new) so I’ll probably sell the Roland TR8s for dirt cheap as a New Years present to whoever messages me first on FB Marketplace.

Worth it? Am I going to regret this?
