How to limit levels & peaks - Synth or DAW?

I enjoy creating and exploring all kinds of sounds with my synth, mostly ambient / drone stuff. Calming, and not abrasive or too loud (I’m not into dance, trance, etc.)

I want to keep all the sound levels down so any swells / buildup doesn’t jump from like -20db to -3db.

I could squash & compress in post, but won’t that create undesirable clipping?

So I’m thinking - compressor in the synth?

Or …

do I want to adjust modulation somehow? Maybe an oscillator or envelope? I’m somewhat new to this aspect.
