A lot of synths on used market are decades old and still reliable, and many of them fairly repairable. I've mostly been buying used synths but looking to make a large investment in a brand new synth that will hopefully last me a good long time 
.
A modern digital synth such as Hydrasynth, Fantom, etc, is a substantial investment and by all accounts the hardware is solid. But I wonder, as we put more and more stuff into chips, which are built on smaller and smaller processes (I know computer chips are down to 3-4 nanometer scale, not sure about synths), how will those fare the test of time? Are the processors themselves increasingly more susceptible to degradation, electron migration, heat and voltage deterioration, travel of silicone impurities, etc? Is there increased risk of the more mundane issues that afflict PCs such as thermal compound drying out and allowing chips to overheat, let alone power supply / capacitor issues and such?
Is there an accepted wisdom in the industry and market? Will a modern Fantom last 30 years, chips and touchscreens and encoders and all?
Curious to hear people's thoughts .
