Flying with a large synth case - any tips?

So, I've been booked for a gig in Europe in the summer, and I'll need to get my box of synths out there. It's fairly large and fairly heavy, and I am incredibly nervous about it being damaged in transit. Have any of you travelled with a big case before? What do I need to know about flight booking, insurance, and whatever I need to do in order for it to arrive in one piece?
