Why are modular jacks on the face of the instrument instead of anywhere else?

As a designer, I will never understand the hostile design of whoever chose to put patch points on the face of the instrument rather than the sides, top, or bottom.

If the knobs are meant to be turned, then cables should not obscure them.

We all take it for granted now, but the obstacle course of wires blocking you from interacting with the knobs is just wild to me.

Think about computers. If your monitor or keyboard had usb jacks right in your way you’d lose your mind.

What if your iPhone had a charging port right on its face?

I’d love to see more designers challenge this convention in modular. Semi-Modular designers already do this, and it’s much more human-centered design. They will throw all the jacks off to the side or top and get it out of your way, but still make it super clear what is being patched to what.
