How can I render a single instrument MID file with different instruments?

I have generated a simple .mid file (using matlab). In it, I play simple melodies, one note at a time, with one instrument.

I would like to render the midi file into wave files a single instrument, but replicate the rendering for many different instruments. I.e. I’d like to make a grand piano version. And a guitar version, and a flute version of the same midi file.

How can I do this (preferably using free software or matlab). I gather I need some sort of synthesizer or soundfont library. However, figuring this out without knowing the terminology is difficult.

Can somebody give me some advice on how to do this? I would be very grateful.

And if I have post this in the wrong subreddit, please accept my apologies and perhaps suggest an appropriate one?
