Covering a synth heavy song?

If you were going to cover a song that is very synth heavy, how would you do it?

Would you try to replicate the sounds as close as possible or redesign the soundscape and put your own unique spin on it?

I’m interested in doing a NIN and/or a Coil cover and while the songs are easy to learn, emulating the sounds might prove to be a bit more difficult.

I would love to hear everyone’s input.
