A pad, give me a pad!

Hello! We all know a “pad” as soon as we hear one but… How could we describe / characterise a pad using words? Or at least some of its qualities? I’m not asking how to make one. I would like to understand how could we use words to “teach” somebody how to tell a pad from, say, a lead when they hear one.
