Tube Headphone Amp As Preamp for Synths?

I saw Woody Piano Shack's video on using a behringer tube preamp to warm up the sound of a digital synth, and im pretty interested in trying this out, but i wanted to see if it'd be worth trying some of the cheaper tube preamps for hi-fi systems to save money. has anyone tried this? are there any major difference between the professional tube DI boxes & hi-fi preamps or is it just the type of hookups & durability?
