EFM Electronics For Music ARCHIVES
EFM Synthesizers was located in Houston, Texas USA. EFM had been on the web since 1996 selling boards and kits to the DIY synthesizer community. The site includes schematics for ARP, Moog, Oberheim, Korg, and EMS-type voltage controlled filters, oscillators, amplifiers, and everything else you might need to build a modular synth. This an archive keeping Tom Gamble's EFM work evolving. EFM Users is for people that use electronics for making music. Synthesizers, computers, software, midi keyboards, midi modules, DIY electronics, guitar amps, stompboxes, transistor radios….ect are all legitimate topics. EFM projects are for experienced DIY builders, because project often require mods to the PCBs, and documentation assumes a high level of electronics experience.

Welcome: Welcome to Electronics For Music. EFM Synthesizers is located in Houston, Texas USA. We specialise in Analog Synthesizer kits. Our mission is to offer an alternative source of high quality, great sounding electronic musical instruments and effects to musicians. We have been on the web since 1996 offering low cost printed circuit boards and kits to the DIY synthesizer community. Many of our patrons are members of the Synth DIY and Analog Heaven users groups as well as our own EFM_Synth group. This year we are pleased to add a selection of VST instruments and effects to our product line. We will continue to develop hardware and software that we hope musicians world wide will continue to like and use. Thanks for 7 great years!

Site Contents: Our Hardware section features ARP, Moog, Oberheim, Korg and EMS type voltage controlled filters VCF, voltage controlled oscillators VCO, voltage controlled amplifiers VCA and all of the associated components to construct a full sized modular synthesizer. If you want a single board solution there are several. The BassAce and TomCat are single VCO midi synthesizers the WildCat is a full single board modular complete with a on board Midi to CV converter. Our plugin section has several VSTi synthesizers including ARP Odyssey, ARP Axxe, Moog Prodigy, Mini Moog and Prophet 600 emulators. We also have a wide selection of VST effects including the VAmp guitar amp modeller and Universal Sound Synthesizer emulator.

Feb 22 2007:
Online pcboard ordering is now active. I have placed an order for the 4600 series. They should be here in about 4 weeks. Order now to get first choice.
4600 doc.pdf

Feb 21 2007:
Here come the filters: The EFM 4600 hardware series is ready. These modules replace many of the 1900 series modules. The 5700 series will complete the migration to the new small form boards. I don't have much 4600 stock. All orders including 4600 series boards will take about a month to to ship until we get more boards in. Prices reflect the fact that I'm having to pay a little more per pad to get the boards made.
The CA3080 has been replaced on all new EFM products.due to the limited availability and high cost of this classic IC. I'm pleased to say that only 2 errors slipped into to 4600 production. The 4628 VCF is missing the drill holes for one resistor and the silk screen for two transistors is reversed on the 4627. Overall, it's an excellent series. They are all on small form boards.
NOTE: VCF7b owners can upgrade to the new 4627 for only $5.00 Read more below.

4614 - VCO
$10.00

EFM VCO5. Low cost, low parts count voltage controlled oscillator. The 4614 is a tri/square oscillator and includes a sine converter . A classic OTA voltage controlled amplifier is also on board.

4621 - VCF
$10.00

EFM VCF1 on a new small form board but the 4621 is more like the classic Oberheim multi-mode SEM filter. If you've had experiance with this filter you know that it's has a rep for going right to the edge and hanging right there in good way. Something odd happend on this version. It self-oscillates big-time! It's great! I don't know why yet but this is the best version so far.

4622 - VCF
$15.00

EFM VCF2 on a new small form board but the 4622 is more like the classic Moog Taurus filter. If you want that 4P ladder sound here it is. This filter is the stuff monster bass is made from. It 's THAT filter.

4626 - VCF
$15.00

EFM VCF6 on a new small form board. The VCF6 is a very good EMS style Diode ladder. It's a little sharper and not as heavy handed as the 4622. This has been a long time EFM favorate.

4627 - VCF
$15.00

EFM VCF7 on a new small form board. It is almost electronically identical to the 7a.
Owners of the VCF7b can upgrade to this board for $5.00 but be aware that there is a list, new stock is low and that shipping may take quite a long.time. There is an error on the 7b board. The 7b works but it's not quite right. The error is very hard to fix. It's just not worth the all of the cutting, hacking and jumping involved. The 4627 Arp style 2600 filter on the other hand is one of the coolest filteres ever. (grin)

4628 - VCF
$10.00

EFM VCF8 on a new small form board but the 4628 is more like the classic Korg MS-20 filter than prior VCF8 versions. Ultra nasty multi-mode filter get 2 for big fun. Cheap and simple.

46212 - VCF
$15.00

EFM VCF12 on a new small form board. The 46212 electronically identical and easier to assemble. This is a remarkabily smooth 4P Korg Delta type VCF. It sounds a lot like a SSM2044 to me. YMMV.

VST Downloads are suspended: I recieved Wildcat Bassace & Tomcat PC boards last week . They are now in stock and all outstanding orders have been shipped as of today. The EFM Studio Bundle 2 will be released this summer. The new price will be $29.95 and it will include all current and prior plugins. A free upgrade will be available for Studio Bundle owners.
EFM VST plugins are Copyright © EFM 2003-2007 and not to be sold or used for any purpose without permission. You are free to use our plugins to make music but please do not trade, sell or provide downloads for our products.

Micromodular VSTi 1.04 Released.. The forum has continued to be hacked so it's gone. Use the Contact button to request old manuals if you need them. We are no longer going to carry our entire line of PCBoards. However we will continue to stock the Widcat and Tomcat as long as we can get them at a reasonable cost. When the Bassace boards run out they are gone for good.

Sept 19 2006:
It's Hardware Time. The temperature here in Houston has finally dropped below 90 degrees. I can finally get back out to the shop and do some hardware (and lawn care!) stuff. It's seems like I have been waiting forever for the summer to end. This year was a hot one.
I've got all sorts of plans but I doubt I'll get them all accomplished. I have more personal responsibilities than usual this year and I'm finally in the process of auctioning off my old manual collection. VST development is more or less suspended until the temperature goes above 90 degress again. I won't say there won't be anything but it's not the main focus for the next 8 months.
The Mad Mouse II is ready. It's basically a Rogue/Taurus type thing designed to work with our midi converters. The boards should be $25 or less. It should be very inexpensive to build. I'll post more details soon. Several more classic boards will join the small form collection.

Sept 1 2006 - New Site Theme:
The old php-nuke site was getting hacked so it's gone. You do not have to register to download documents or plugins. If you have a question or need support you will need to register on the new forum. Use the Contact link for EFM business or order questions.

The EFM files
When i started with synth DIY in 2005 the synth DIY community looked very different than today. There have been only few places to buy PCBs for documented projects, at least to be found for a beginner like me. There was Oakley, which seemed to be expensive (which it wasn't, is is just high quality), PAIA (i didn't get it), Ken Stones CGS, and Tom Gambles EFM or ele4music. CGS looked very complicated, and back than there were not that much basic modules available. So ele4music seemed to be the way to go.
The funny thing wth the EFM stuff was that the schematic was almost the only thing you could depend on. PCBs and BOMs both often had errors. And then his circuits are simplified. So a lot of people started modifying them to achieve better results. Anyways, it was a great learning experience - due to the kind help of people like Yves Usson, Harry Bissel, and others...
I built several of Tom Gambles EFM 1900er series PCBs. He made a close out and sold his remaining stock in april 2007. There are a lot of these PCBs spread all around the world, many unbuild yet, i guess.
BAD NEWS: When these PCBs where actually released there was a forum at the EFM site. This forum is gone.
GOOD NEWS: Many thanks to Dave Kendall who filed many of the topics of the old EFM forum, and  now i am glad to publish them. The topics discuss errors, tweaks and modifications... Also thanks to Tim Stinchcombe, who provided me with additional files to complete the list. And many thanks to CJ Miller for providing all the old pre 1900 files. Any helpful information is appreciated, so don't hesitate to contact me if you have some files available that you might want to share here.
I don't know what Tom Gamble does today. I hope he is still well.
Below you will find almost all files i got. I hope to find some more time to upload everything some day.
