Sequencer trigger to sidechain input?

If a compressor has a sidechain/detector input, can you instead of audio signals plug in a sequencer gate signal?

Specifically: I have a Yamaha GC2020 IIB on loan, and I'd like to try triggering it with one of the drum trigger outs of my Keystation Pro.

Am I correct that line level signals, which the comp is used to seeing, are a lower voltage than a gate signal? Is the difference enough to potentially damage the circuitry?
