Roland R-8 drum machine MIDI in help?

I recently snagged a second hand Roland R8 “human rhythm composer” drum machine for next to nothing. Amazing piece of gear with great 80s sounding drums built right in.

Regardless of what I do, I can’t seem to get it to read midi clock signals from Ableton via a midi interface. I’ve reset the R-8, have used different ports and cables on the interface. I’ve done my best to muck about with the R-8 MIDI settings, but to the best of my knowledge, it should be working. It doesn’t seem to be reading any MIDI sync commands.

Anyone familiar with this drum machine? Any way to tell whether my MIDI in is busted, short of popping it open?
